Breaking Ground in Cully Neighborhood

Living Cully and Hacienda Community Development Corporation (Hacienda CDC) broke ground on March 12th, 2021 on their upcoming construction project titled, Las Adelitas. Las Adelitas will be a four-story affordable apartment unit that will create 142 new homes and feature an open use outdoor plaza.  This 194,424 sf building will feature Salazar Architects as lead designer, and LMC Construction as lead general contractor.

Hacienda CDC had been working for years to acquire the land that used to home the defunct strip club, “Sugar Shack”. Their team finally achieved their goal in 2017 by the assistance of CRAFT3, Prosper Portland, and many other charitable organizations.

Hacienda CDC wrote this on their website: “Las Adelitas will create and retain area jobs, provide housing and community spaces, and support economic opportunities to meet the needs of working families and people of color in the Cully Neighborhood.”

“Adelitas will be the largest redevelopment project in the Cully Neighborhood to date and the largest public investment in the NE Cully community,” they added.

The Las Adelitas title comes from feminist Mexican Revolutionaries who assisted during the Mexican Revolution. This name provides a significant meaning  for those in the Cully Neighborhood as we watch the transformation of a place that once exploited women, to becoming a place that will celebrate.

The planned building amenities includes a large roof-top Solar PV array and an electric vehicle (EV) program. This will also include a large outdoor public plaza that will feature local mural art, and pedestrian-friendly streetscape.

The geometric exterior pulls inspiration from the indigenous and modern architecture from the Americas. The bold, contrasting colors and unique overlapping forms will pay homage to the heritage of many people who live within the Cully Neighborhood. With an emphasis put on sustainability, Las Adelitas will also have Earth Advantage Gold certification.

Completion of Las Adelitas is currently scheduled for October 2022.

ACME has been a partner with Hacienda CDC for many years and are overjoyed to see a part of our own neighborhood be used to revitalize the community. The new Las Adelitas site is just a few feet away from our own studio, and it will be exciting to watch as this project continues to progress.

We’re also proud to announce we have also been awarded key fabrication services within the Las Adelitas construction. We patiently await for the near future where we will be able to provide additional support to the team of LMC Construction as they finish. We will keep you updated as more work moves through, and welcome the construction of Las Adelitas.
